Top 10 Interview Tips

Prepping for an interview can be nerve-wracking, whether it's for your first job or your tenth job. Luckily, we've put together a comprehensive list of advice so you can feel knowledgeable and confident meeting with your potential future employer.

1) Dress for success...at that company.

Look up the company’s social media and see if you can catch the “at work vibe” as to how people dress. Then take it a step up. A business suit or tailored black dress isn’t always appropriate.

2) Have a brief, exciting story prepared for a time you succeeded, failed, and used teamwork.

Use as many numbers as you can to qualify success!

3) The company has read your resume. Tell them stories/anecdotes that relate, but didn’t fit that you want them to know.

4) Be yourself… if you’re funny, crack jokes. If you’re passionate about XYZ, let them know.

5) It’s ok to accept water/tea/coffee if the person offers.

In fact, if you’re prone to getting nervous, water is great to avoid dry mouths and have something to hold.

6) Have research on the company prepared…you cannot over research.

Talk about why you want to work there

Reference some of the work they’ve done or positive things they’ve been recognized for

Tell them why you’d be a good fit because of what you know of their culture

7) Have questions prepared for each person you interview with and take notes on what they say.

These can be general in terms of the company (What is your culture like? What are the expected working hours? What does success look like on this team?)

These can be specific to the interviewer if you’ve done research on them (What made you choose XYZ position or company? What is your favorite and least favorite thing about working her/your position? What does your typical day look like?)

It can also be about your place and role at the company (What is the growth potential in the position? What other teams are you collaborating with? Are there mentorship opportunities?)

8) Get the contact information of the people who are interviewing you so that you can reach out with follow up questions.

9) Send a thank you note.

Handwritten if you can, but email works too.

Include specific information they shared with you during the interview and what you liked that they said.

10) HAVE CONFIDENCE. People want to know you believe in yourself and will work hard to get to where you want to be. Own your strengths and let them see you shine.

Let us know if any of these have helped you + any other tips you have to add! 🦋
